Updated on November 24, 2010

Indians and Diwali

Deepavali (as it is known in the Southern states of India) or Diwali(in Northern India) is the famous Indian festival of lights. Yes, houses, temples, streets, shopping malls are lit up with strings of colourful, lights. The houses are lit up with little lamps known as diyas-little lamps filled with oil and a wick lit up. These diyas are decorated with colours ,mirrors and baubles to brighten and come in various sizes. As the sun goes down, all the ladies and girls light them and place them in rows on the window sills and the main entrance to their houses. Tall silver or brass lamps carved with the figurines of Goddess Lakshmi are also kept at the main door to welcome guests and in the puja room. These are also lit with larger wicks. Large rangoli drawings are drawn and filled with bright colours at the main entrance to every house and also in the puja room. The main door is decorated with ethnic hangings or the traditional string of fresh mango leaves and flowers. Traditional Sweets made of ghee, milk and sugar top the list of favourites in every home and are offered to every guest. Friends exchange sweets ,dry fruits, puja thalis, diyas, cards and the mood is at once festive and auspicious. Fireworks form an integral part of Diwali festivities, and families are seen enjoying lighting various kinds as they light up the night sky.

Diwali Gifts

Gifting forms an important traditional feature of Diwali, whether it is among friends or family, or companies who choose this time of year to grant their employees a bonus in addition to their salary. Corporates too use this festive Diwali to gift their customers and clients which is seen as a sign to keep up good relations as well as to bless them with peace and prosperity. Among Hindu dieties, Lord Ganesh stands for prosperity and fulfillment and Goddess Lakshmi as diety of wealth. So it is customary to gift articles with Ganesha or Lakshmi embedded on them.
